CLASS5

Our DT topic this term has been cam mechanisms, which turn rotary motion into linear movement. This was perfect to create our very own moving Easter cards! By turning the cam, the egg hatches and out pops a cute, yellow chick. Perfect! Happy Easter!

Year 5 had a fantastic afternoon when they took part in the Gloucestershire KNEX Challenge where we had to design and build a model that would work in an automated warehouse. Whilst doing this, we demonstrated excellent team working skills, innovative thinking and perseverance.

Well done to Poppy and Morgan who will represent Hempsted Primary in May at the Gloucestershire KNEX challenge event.

Thanks to Rosie for coming in and inspiring us to pursue a STEM career!

To conclude our topic on the ancient Greeks, we held the Hempsted Olympics. Each house represented an ancient Greek city state and competitors battled against each other in a running race, javelin throw, long jump and chariot race. Our winners were as follows:

Arthur, Corinth, Javelin.

Josh, Corinth, Long Jump.

Lewis, Athens, Running Race.

Jasper and Arian, Sparta and Megara, Chariot Race.

Well done to all competitors!

After 9 weeks of ukulele lessons with the amazing Lee, Class 5 gave a concert to parents and children to show off their new skills. It's incredible to think that, at the start, we weren't even sure which way up a ukulele was supposed to be held! And now, here we were reading music, and even singing along whilst we played! Well done Year 5  - you all worked so hard - and thank you again to Lee for her enthusiasm and encouragement.

Our art focus this term has been sculpture. We looked at the work of american pop artist Keith Haring and then used cereal boxes and paper mache to create these fantastic sculptures.

As part of our Ancient Greek Topic, Year 5 looked at how the Greeks developed democracy. We discussed who could and could not vote and, as only Athenian men over 18 were allowed to vote, Miss Fyfe picked 9 boys to decide which type of sweets the rest of the class would have. We then discussed the fairness of this system and compared it to modern day democracy. We also replicated the Greek method of voting by placing a small stone into a pot.

As part of our Forces topic in Science, we have been investigating air resistance. We looked at how it affected how long it took for parachutes of different sizes to drop from a height. We found that the parachute with a larger surface area took longer to fall than the parachute with the smallest surface area. We then made our own pulleys to successfully lift a range of objects! We also investigated how water resistance affected how long different shapes took to sink. We found that the shape with the largest surface area (the dish) took the longest time to sink and the shape with the smallest surface area (the pointed cylinder) took the shortest time to sink.
